Anglers can choose either sea fishing or river fishing on the River Deveron
Macduff is located on the east of the River Deveron estuary. The town has its roots in the fishing industry which continues to support the busy port. An active shipyard building and repairing both wooden and steel boats is located beside the harbour.
There are great local attractions including a Marine Aquarium which showcases sealife indigenous to the Moray Firth. Puffin Cruise runs daily boat trips (weather permitting) for fishing, bird watching, dolphin and whale spotting.
Bowling, squash and ten pin bowling facilities can be taken advantage of in Macduff.
Crossing the bridge over the River Deveron westwards into Banff, Duff House is immediately visible on the river flood plain flanked by the golf course. Dating back to the eighteenth century, it has been the seat of the Earls of Fife. It now houses the art and antiquities of the National Gallery of Scotland as well as Historic Scotland. Through time however Duff House has also functioned as a sanatorium and a prisoner of war billet in the Second World War. In the sheltered grounds of Duff House there is a well equipped children’s play park and leisurely woodland walks can be enjoyed along the banks of the river.
For the energetic there is the Princess Royal Sports Centre with a gym and astro turf facilities. Extensive, clean, sandy beaches can be enjoyed at Banff Links and Banff Bay.
The famous Whisky Trail is within driving distance with numerous distilleries such as Glenfiddich, Glenlivet and Strathisla well worth a visit. A short drive away there are castles at Craigievar, Crathes, Delgatie, Fyvie and Huntly. Historic monuments and sites spanning the Bronze and Iron ages, the Vikings and the kingdom of Macbeth through to more recent times are waiting to be explored. Aberdeen and Elgin are the nearest shopping centres with many tourist attractions of their own. To the west there is a Dolphin Centre at Spey Bay and many outdoor sports facilities can be found along the River Spey and in the Grampian and Cairngorm Mountains.
